Invasive Species

The Lillooet Regional Invasive Species Society (LRISS)  has been partnering with the Tyaughton Lake residents for over 10 years. It started with the discovery of Yellow Flag Iris on the lakeshore. Since then, we have been collaborating to remove this invasive plant with the help of local residents. We are extremely grateful for the collaborative efforts to prevent and remove invasives from the lake and surrounding area.

Whether you are new to the area or a long-time resident, there are a few key things that you can do to help LRISS prevent new infestations and limit the spread on existing infestations.

  1. Invasive ID: Get to know the plants and animals that should live in the area. iNaturalist is a great app that can help you identify native and invasive plants, animals, insects etc in your area. It is easy to download onto your phone. Seek is the iNaturalist’s kids version and doesn’t need wifi. You can hover over a plant with the camera in this app and it will help you identify plants and more.
  2.  Report any unusual plants or animals that you don’t normally see around Tyaughton. It is best if you go to the LRISS website and use our reporting form OR just email us a few very good photos: info@LRISS.ca
  3. Prevent invasive species. Check out LRISS’s Know before you Go section on our website. It has lots of great prevention tips for all types of activities like hiking, boating and gardening.

Invasive Plants

All of LRISS’s priority plants are found on our website. You can see the definitions for our priority categories and each of the plants in those categories. There are two lists below that describe some of the key plants that you’ll either see quite frequently in your area or ones that are less frequent and a very high priority to report. There are also invasive species, like fish and insects, that are highlighted on our website for your information.

These plants are far less frequent in the area and we need your help to watch for new infestations. Please report any suspected infestations of these plants to LRISS.

Here are plants that you will likely see in the area because they have been in the area for many years. If you get to know them well, you can report new infestations where you haven’t seen them before.
